Aces Season Opener Proves to be a
Thriller
Sept 3rd- West Chester East High school:

It has been nearly a year since the Aces had stepped foot on the grounds at West Chester East High School
when they won the PIAA District 1 Championship. Now back at West Chester East, the WCE team through a
few curve balls at the Aces early.

Being the Aces 2nd home during the 2010 playoff run, the last thing WC East wanted to do was make things
familiar for the Aces,so instead of playing on the turf, the match was set to be played on wet, long grass. To
the Aces, it didn't matter, they adapted and overcame.

In the 1st half the scoring chances came early. Junior midfielder Kenny Lassiter made strong runs through the
WCE defense to create some good opportunities early.  Freshman Marcelo Pernot came out strong with some
good runs into the defense, but neither could find the back of the net.

Tireless work from the Aces midfield of Senior Roberto Bonilla, Senior Co-Captain Shane Votto, and junior
Matthew Lindheim created opportunities, and kept any incoming attacks to a minimal.

In the 1st half, a run by Lassiter created an opportunity to score when the Aces were awarded a corner kick.
Lindheim stepped up to take the kick and his corner found the head of forward Senior Co-Captain Ben Hriscu
who sent the ball past an outstretched WC East keeper.

The LM Defense of Seniors Will Podrasky, Joey Gingold, Co-captain Tyler Niles and sophomore Noah Blodget
kept the ball out of the Aces defensive end well and junior keeper Connor Yu swept up any balls that managed
to make it through the defense.

The 1st half would end 1-0 to the Aces, but the 2nd half would prove to be a much different game. It seemed
like a switch was turned on in the WC East team, as a clean game in the 1st half, turned into a chippy, physical
game with several unnecessary fouls, which in turn ended up with the ejection of a WCE player. Deep in the
2nd half, the WCE team managed to break the defensive line and would score a goal with 8 minutes left in the
game.

The Aces, took their time stayed composed and attacked well and kept the ball on the offensive after being
scored on, but they were ready for the overtime period.

The overtime sudden death period started with an onslaught of Aces shots on the WCE goal. Lassiter, Hriscu,
Votto and Niles all had opportunities on the goal within a span of just minutes, but could not connect. A corner
kick mis cleared by the defense of WCE would fall in front of Hriscu, who slotted the ball past the keeper again
to give the Aces a thrilling victory in their first game of the season.
